A typical tool for totaling purchases in small shops in remote villages in the Ukrainian Carpathians. While market technology is rudimentary, most of the daily needs of families—including freshly-baked bread, freshly-laid eggs, and freshly-squirted milk—is seldom more than a hundred meters from all the houses in a village.
