"As in a common folkloric motif the world over, legend has it that Bolesław the Brave still lies sleeping with his armored knights and their gilded steeds in a large cavern under Giewont—the mountain that soars above Zakopane and with sufficient imagination is shaped like the body of a giant “Sleeping Knight”—waiting to sally forth through cavern walls fractured by thunder and lightning to rescue Poland in its time of direst need."
